The base is turned out of 18 segmented pieces and the waves 36 pieces, carved, glued onto the base, and re-turned. The grain is the grain of the wood and the 36 segments are the waves, yielding an undulating pattern as they rise and fall. Cocobolo was chosen for its grain pattern. The base is raised off the surface by three turned ebony feet to ensure airflow to the bottom of the piece so that moisture is evenly distributed to top and bottom. Three feet were chosen, for stability on any surface.
